Nation's Largest Shared Energy Storage Achieves First Grid Connection Success

At 6:58 AM on November 30, the first phase of the 355MW/920MWh shared energy storage project—independently developed, constructed, and operated by Beijing Tianqi Hongyuan New Energy Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Beijing Tianqi Hongyuan”), with core equipment designed and manufactured in-house—successfully connected to the grid for the first time. This marks the official grid integration of China's largest shared energy storage cabinet system to date. Located in Weichang Manchu and Mongolian Autonomous County, Chengde City, Hebei Province, the project employs an innovative shared energy storage model to support new energy development and energy conservation in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, providing crucial backing for new energy storage allocation in the Weichang area. The project also achieved the successful grid connection of both the energy storage units and the 220kV substation within 24 hours, demonstrating Tianqihongyuan's exceptional engineering quality and efficient management system.

The project aggregates power through 16 sets of 35kV collection lines to the newly constructed main transformer's 35kV side at Tianqi Shared Energy Storage Step-Up Substation. After step-up, power is transmitted via a single 220kV line to the Paile 500kV Substation. This project involves the construction of one new 220kV step-up substation, planned with two 180MVA double-winding transformers rated at 220/35kV, completed in a single phase.

Beijing Tianqi Hongyuan integrated multiple core patented technologies into this project, comprehensively enhancing the performance and reliability of the energy storage system. Through plug-in optimizer technology, the project effectively decouples the weakest links within battery clusters, maximizing the capacity of each individual cell. Additionally, the unique 1P64 PACK thermal management design ensures temperature differences within a single cluster do not exceed 3 degrees Celsius, fundamentally optimizing battery consistency and operational efficiency. Combined with active 10A balancing technology, the system can simultaneously balance 400 cells, further enhancing operational stability. The EMS system employs advanced sequential AI algorithms to perform real-time assessment and optimized scheduling of cell operational states, enabling the entire energy storage system's cycle life to approach the design lifespan of individual cells.

The synergistic application of these technologies enables the energy storage system to not only meet primary and secondary frequency regulation demands of the power grid but also undertake multiple ancillary services such as black start capability and peak shaving, providing robust assurance for grid stability.

During project implementation, Beijing Tianqi Hongyuan coordinated all parties with meticulous planning, completing the entire process from design to grid connection within just four months. Throughout commissioning, the team closely monitored equipment performance metrics and swiftly resolved on-site issues, ultimately achieving a seamless and efficient first-time grid connection for the 355MW/920MWh unit.

This project serves 13 new energy initiatives, including the Chengde Yanan Gemstone Mountain Wind Farm, the Aerospace Hongyuan Weichang 300MW Wind-Storage-Hydrogen Integrated Project, and the Weichang 200MW Photovoltaic Energy Storage Demonstration Project. Through a centralized shared energy storage solution, it effectively meets the new energy storage requirements in the Weichang area of Chengde, driving regional energy structure optimization and green development.

The successful grid connection of this energy storage project demonstrates Beijing Tianqi Hongyuan's robust technological R&D capabilities and exceptional project management expertise. It also provides an innovative pathway for the deep integration of new energy and energy storage, offering valuable experience for promoting efficient energy storage solutions in more regions in the future.
